The 2010 Giro d’Italia pays a visit to South Tyrol - on the Kronplatz

The end of May this year will once again see the Giro d'Italia (Tour of Italy) passing through South Tyrol as the event is held for the 93rd time. On 25th May 2010 the challenge for competitors will be to overcome the 16th stage, the demanding mountain time trial which begins in St. Vigil on the Kronplatz.
Every year the Giro d'Italia adds extra spice to its programme with strenuous stages in the Alps – including South Tyrol. And so this year, as in 2008, the mountain time trial will once again be taking place from St. Vigil on the Kronplatz. The length of the course, which is approx. 13 kilometers, may at first glance not appear to be overly taxing, but the riders must get the better of an astounding difference in altitude of over 1000 meters at a maximum incline of 24 per cent. In addition, the riders are compelled to cover the last third from the Furkel Pass to the summit on an unpaved road. This stage, together with the extremely steep sections at Zoncolan and the Gavia Pass, is justly considered to be among the highlights of the 2010 Giro d'Italia.
One day later, on 26th May, the 17th stage runs from Bruneck in the Puster Valley (Val Pusteria) to Peio – another event not to be missed! One thing is absolutely certain: it will be an exciting and - we hope - fair race!
