The Messner Mountain Museums (MMM) in South Tyrol and
Belluno
back
Get
closer to the mountains, understand them, meet their
people – with his Messner Mountain Museum project, or
MMM for short, the South Tyrol-native and extreme
mountaineer, Reinhold Messner, has created five museums
which express the passion for the mountains in a very
special way. All in all there are five museums, all
in different locations. The mountain museums’
headquarters are in Sigmundskron Castle in Firmian near
Bolzano. MMM Firmian covers 1100 square metres, where
visitors can find out all about the history and art of
mountain climbing. In contrast, MMM Juval in Naturns
deals with the myth of the mountain. The castle is also
Messner’s summer residence. Further into the
Vinschgau Valley is the Alpine Curiosa, which tells
mountaineers’ stories and exhibits curiosities from the
Alpine region; it is part of MMM Ortles, which is
situated at the foot of the majestic Ortler in Sulden
and which deals with the subject of South Tyrol’s
highest mountain and the eternal ice.
The newest of
the five mountain museums, MMM Ripa, can be found in the
east of the region. Mountain peoples from all over the
world, such as Mongols, Sherpas and many more, await
visitors at Brunico Castle.
Finally,
MMM Dolomites in
the Italian province of Belluno is entirely dedicated to
the subject of rock. This museum, which is located on
Monte Rite, portrays the history of the development of
the Dolomites.
Interested? Then let yourself be
carried away by the magic of the mountains and visit
South Tyrol’s Messner Mountain Museums. The mountain is
calling…
