The gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle in Merano and surroundings
back
Situated
above the spa town of Merano and named as Italy’s most
beautiful botanic garden in 2005, this magical location
has gradually developed into a major public attraction.
Ground was first broken on the 12 hectare
Trauttmansdorff Castle Gardens project in 1994. The
area, which has a touch of the exotic about it, is
located on a sunny slope at an altitude of 334 to 438 metres above sea level and is naturally shaped like an
amphitheatre. Thanks to the perfect climatic conditions
around 100,000 different plants grow here today. The
site is divided into 4 garden zones: sun gardens, water
and terraced gardens, woodland gardens and South
Tyrolean flora. Visitors can immerse themselves in
natural and cultural landscapes from the world over and
marvel at the harmonious symbiosis of art and nature. At
the heart of the Gardens is Trauttmansdorff Castle,
which was built in 1850 and which today houses the South
Tyrolean Museum of Tourism, the
Touriseum. The museum
contains a fascinating presentation of 200 years of
Alpine and spa tourism that weaves its way through 20
rooms. In the Schlossgarten Restaurant with its large
sun terrace, as well as in the Palm Café, you can
recharge your batteries and let what you have seen work
its magic!
